This story is a fine example of how classic plays can be developed for the stage in 2022 whilst simultaneously restoring the integrity of its original playwright.
ABOUT
Dafna Rubinstein is a distinguished theatre director and playwright, whose academic foundation was laid with a BA (Hons) in Theatre Directing from the prestigious Rose Bruford College in London, England. Her career reflects her commitment to the art of storytelling on stage, demonstrating a notable ability to explore a wide range of genres, cultures, and geographical boundaries.
Her repertoire is marked by its diversity and depth, featuring notable works such as the introspective "Early Retirement" at Tsavta Theater, and the cross-cultural "Homesick" which debuted at London's New End Theater and was later translated and performed under her direction at the Cameri Theater. afna's international presence was solidified with "All the Time in the World," a production that received acclaim at the FTA TransAmériques Festival in Montreal and the Isha Theater Festival in Bat Yam. her creation "A Different Tune" aimed to engage the young audiences of the Cameri Youth Group, further demonstrating her ability to connect with a diverse range of viewers.
Dafna's directorial expertise extends to the classics, with productions of "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Tamuna Theatre, as well as contemporary narratives like Winter Miller's "Inception" at the IDF Theater, and poignant stories such as "The Circle of Cancer" by Naled Ann at Beit Zvi Acting School, and "This Soldier is Me" at the IDF Theater.
In addition to her directorial and playwright achievements, Dafna has served as an assistant director to Tony Clarke at Hampstead Theater in London, and to Israel Gurion on productions at the Orna Porat Children's Theater.
Over her three years serving as the artistic director of the Cameri Youth Group, Dafna actively engaged with young people, nurturing their interest in theatre. This role reflected her dedication to youth involvement in the arts. Additionally, her work with theatre groups in various prisons and the Hosen Hostel illustrates her commitment to using theatre as a means for community support and individual rehabilitation, showcasing the art form's capacity for positive impact.
Dafna is also a co-founder and former chairman of the Association of Independent Theater Creators, emphasizing her dedication to fostering a supportive and innovative theatre community.
